Michael Sendivogius was one of the major writers on alchemy during the early decades of the 17th century. His book, the New Chemical Light issued in 1608, was very influential on thee alchemical ideas of that time. In 1659 the sixth volume of the massive compendium of alchemical texts, the 'Theatrum Chemicum', included a commentary on Sendivogius' ideas, written by an unidentified author Orthelius. It included a series of twelve emblematic woodcuts.
