When stroke reveals its ugly head, it does so ruthlessly and with alarming speed, callously, destroying lives in its wake of destruction; sweeping up those close to the survivor in its vortex so that no one has the opportunity to plan for the future. Usually, it is you, the immediate family or partner, who takes on the unrewarding role of caregiver.
With no formal training, you typically dive in headfirst, not giving a second thought about what it entails. Caregiving is one of the toughest jobs you will ever encounter. It's demanding and unrewarding. But when there are rewards, they are huge, making it all worthwhile. Caregiving is a twenty-four-seven job that does not adhere to standard working hours.
There will be times when you may feel as if you have bitten off more than you can chew. Without help, you will struggle to stay afloat. Informally caring for a survivor is a role taken on out of love, an unconditional love for the survivor. Few relationships can endure this extreme challenge.
The author, himself, an 11-year-plus post-stroke survivor, wrote this book to help shed light on what an informal caregiver can expect. Find out ways to help your loved one and make things easier for both of you. With a better understanding of why they are doing certain things, he will help you prepare for the unexpected. Surviving a stroke is a sure way of testing everyone's limits.
