Having faced serious governance issues for several years, the microfinance sector in Cameroon has seen a surge in the closure and liquidation of several of its organisations. Control over these institutions is limited to monitoring by supervisory bodies, whose remit remains based on Regulation No. 01/02/CEMAC/UMAC/COBAC concerning the conditions for the exercise and supervision of microfinance activities within CEMAC. Assessment by rating agencies therefore remains very limited. In this study, the author draws on the technical guide developed jointly by Microrate, CGAP and the IDB; he evaluates an MFI based on fourteen performance indicators, comparing them with those of Microrate 29. The results reveal that an MFI's ability to engage a rating agency remains contingent upon a thorough understanding of their evaluation criteria.
