El nombre Pitágoras a menudo evoca una imagen familiar: una figura barbuda con toga señalando un triángulo, proclamando el famoso teorema que lleva su nombre. Mucho antes de la formalización de la ciencia y la filosofÃa tal como las conocemos hoy, los primeros pitagóricos buscaban el conocimiento con la ferviente creencia de que el universo era inteligible, ordenado y fundamentalmente numérico. No se conformaban solo con medidas cuantitativas; veÃan en los números la clave de la estructura del cosmos, el ritmo de la música, los ciclos del alma y las leyes que rigen la vida moral. Para ellos, las matemáticas eran un ejercicio espiritual: una ascensión de la mente hacia lo divino.
El pitagorismo es una escuela de paradojas: racional y mÃstica a la vez, empÃrica y especulativa, cientÃfica y religiosa a la vez. Influyó no solo en Platón y los neoplatónicos, sino también en corrientes de pensamiento de la teologÃa cristiana, la ciencia renacentista y el esoterismo moderno. El ideal pitagórico de un universo regido por el orden y la armonÃa sigue resonando tanto en los paradigmas cientÃficos como en las investigaciones metafÃsicas.
Esta obra no pretende reconstruir al Pitágoras histórico, una tarea plagada de contradicciones y mitos. Tampoco pretende catalogar exhaustivamente las enseñanzas de los diversos pensadores que llevaron su nombre a lo largo de los siglos. Más bien, este libro busca trazar los contornos del pensamiento pitagórico como una tradición viva, una lente filosófica a través de la cual la realidad ha sido interpretada, cuestionada y venerada.
Comenzamos con los orÃgenes de la comunidad pitagórica en el siglo VI a. C., explorando sus prácticas de secretismo, vida en comunidad y la doctrina de la transmigración de las almas. Examinamos el lenguaje simbólico de los números, el papel de la armonÃa en la ética y la cosmologÃa, y cómo las ideas pitagóricas se fusionaron con los desarrollos filosóficos posteriores y los influyeron.
