El utilitarismo surgió a finales del siglo XVIII y principios del XIX, sobre todo a través de las obras de Jeremy Bentham y John Stuart Mill, quienes buscaron aportar claridad, coherencia y un espÃritu de pragmatismo humanista a la investigación ética. En una época en la que la filosofÃa moral a menudo se basaba en la tradición, la autoridad o la metafÃsica abstracta, el utilitarismo ofreció un enfoque radicalmente empÃrico y democrático: la moral podÃa medirse, compararse y justificarse racionalmente a través de sus consecuencias. Esta visión ha inspirado tanto admiración como crÃtica a lo largo de los siglos.
La propuesta radical de Bentham -que el placer y el dolor no son solo sensaciones, sino la base misma de la ética- sentó las bases para una revolución en nuestra forma de pensar sobre las leyes, los derechos, la gobernanza y la conducta personal. Mill, basándose en los fundamentos de Bentham, introdujo matices al reconocer las diferencias cualitativas en los placeres y defender la libertad individual como un ingrediente clave del bienestar colectivo. Pensadores posteriores, como Henry Sidgwick, G. E. Moore, R. M. Hare y Peter Singer, continuaron perfeccionando y cuestionando la teorÃa, extendiendo su aplicación a todo, desde la pobreza global hasta los derechos de los animales.
Este libro no se limita a repasar la historia del utilitarismo; su objetivo es rastrear la corriente viva del pensamiento utilitarista a lo largo de los siglos, confrontándolo con los dilemas éticos del pasado y del presente. Exploramos cómo el razonamiento utilitarista se ha aplicado a cuestiones de justicia, atención médica, economÃa y polÃtica ambiental, y cómo continúa suscitando preguntas difÃciles pero necesarias sobre qué valoramos y por qué.
Sin embargo, el utilitarismo no está exento de detractores. Los crÃticos argumentan que puede ser demasiado exigente, demasiado impersonal o insuficientemente atento a los derechos y la justicia. A lo largo de este libro, tomaremos en serio estas objeciones, no para descartarlas, sino para examinar si el utilitarismo puede responderlas, y cómo, sin perder su idea central: que la moralidad, en esencia, trata de mejorar vidas.
