Este libro indaga en una de las escuelas filosóficas más influyentes y controvertidas de la historia moderna: el materialismo dialéctico. Enraizado en las tradiciones intelectuales de la dialéctica hegeliana y el materialismo marxista, el materialismo dialéctico representa no solo un método filosófico, sino una cosmovisión que busca comprender y transformar el mundo a través de la contradicción, el movimiento y las condiciones materiales.
El materialismo dialéctico surgió en el siglo XIX, moldeado decisivamente por Karl Marx y Friedrich Engels, quienes reconfiguraron la dialéctica idealista de Hegel en un marco materialista. Argumentaron que las ideas no impulsan la historia independientemente del mundo material; más bien, la conciencia humana se configura por las estructuras sociales y económicas en las que se desarrolla. Desde esta perspectiva, el pensamiento no es un proceso abstracto de la vida, sino inseparable de la realidad vivida y concreta del trabajo humano, la producción y las relaciones sociales.
El método dialéctico, desarrollado por Hegel, enfatizó que la realidad no es estática sino dinámica, compuesta de contradicciones cuyas tensiones y resoluciones impulsan el desarrollo. Marx y Engels preservaron este núcleo, pero invirtieron su fundamento idealista. De este modo, establecieron una dialéctica materialista: un método para comprender los fenómenos históricos y naturales como procesos interconectados, en constante cambio y moldeados por contradicciones internas.
Para el materialismo dialéctico, el cambio no es accidental, sino necesario; surge de los conflictos inherentes a los sistemas. Ya sea en el mundo natural, en la sociedad o en el ámbito del pensamiento, las contradicciones no son anomalÃas, sino el motor mismo de la transformación. Por lo tanto, la historia no es una serie aleatoria de acontecimientos, ni un progreso constante guiado por la teleologÃa divina o moral, sino un proceso impulsado por la lucha entre fuerzas opuestas: clase contra clase, viejo contra nuevo, base contra superestructura.
Sin embargo, el materialismo dialéctico no es solo una teorÃa sobre cómo cambian las cosas. Es también una teorÃa de la praxis: de la acción informada y decidida en el mundo. Ofrece no solo una manera de interpretar el mundo, sino, como Marx insistió célebremente, una manera de transformarlo. Sirve como fundamento filosófico para la teorÃa polÃtica marxista, la estrategia revolucionaria y el análisis crÃtico del capitalismo, el imperialismo y la ideologÃa.
A lo largo del siglo XX, el materialismo dialéctico se convirtió en la doctrina filosófica oficial de muchos estados socialistas. Su institucionalización condujo tanto a desarrollos como a distorsiones. A veces rÃgidamente dogmatizado, a veces aplicado creativamente, el materialismo dialéctico fue adoptado, criticado y reformulado de diversas maneras por pensadores de todo el mundo, desde Lenin, Mao y Lukács hasta filósofos contemporáneos que aún lidian con sus implicaciones tras la evolución del capitalismo global.
