This work investigates the optimization of a photovoltaic-powered reverse osmosis (PV-RO) desalination plant to combat freshwater scarcity. It provides a comprehensive analysis of desalination technologies, emphasizing the benefits of coupling reverse osmosis with solar energy. To enhance efficiency, mathematical models are developed for all system components, including the PV array, converters, induction motor, centrifugal pump, and RO membrane. A critical challenge addressed is partial shading on the PV generator, which severely degrades power and water production. To mitigate this, the study evaluates several Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) techniques. Results prove that Extremum Seeking Control (ESC) and its hybrid variants outperform traditional methods like Perturb and Observe (P&O) in capturing the global maximum power point under non-uniform irradiance. The book proposes a robust control strategy combining ESC for the PV array, Lyapunov control for DC-bus stabilization, and a twelve-sector Direct Torque Control (DTC) for the motor. Experimental validations confirm this integrated scheme maximizes energy extraction and freshwater yield.
