Although the concept of the SSE is still relatively new in sub-Saharan Africa, the experience in Togo demonstrates the existence of such entities under various names. In fact, existing SSE organizations (SSEOs) account for 50% of the national economy and are mostly part of the informal economy. The latter employs 80% of the working population in sectors, one of the most dynamic components of which over the past four decades has undoubtedly been the motorcycle taxi sector. By taking stock of the motorcycle taxi sector and identifying its strengths, this study proposed consolidating these elements to transform it into a true SSE organization. The study concluded that the motorcycle taxi industry, by creating hundreds of thousands of jobs, injects more into the national economy than the state budget and mobilizes nearly four times the resources of the Togolese diaspora. However, the precarious conditions under which this activity is carried out called for recommendations aimed at revitalizing the sector. The book is intended for SSE stakeholders interested in revitalizing the motorcycle taxi sector. Its drafting was supervised by Mr. Frédéric Lapeyre of the ILO.
