Every organization says safety matters. Many build policies, reporting systems, audits, meetings, dashboards, and layers of approval intended to prove it. Yet useful work cannot be done without risk, and a green dashboard can coexist with growing operational exposure.
Risk Is the Work challenges the belief that safety itself can be managed like quality in a manufacturing process. Zero defects may be an appropriate production goal, but aviation, healthcare, emergency response, transportation, and other operational environments require people to act under uncertainty, exercise judgment, and accept risk to accomplish a mission.
Drawing on experience as an airline captain, retired U.S. Air Force pilot and maintenance professional, and evaluator of commercial aviation organizations supporting government missions, Jeff Hicks examines how well-intended safety systems drift into safety theater.
This book explains:
- Why excessive caution can transfer risk and consume critical margin
- Why judgment must be developed rather than designed out of the operation
- How risk moves when missions, equipment, staffing, information, or controls change
- Why a report has no protective value until it reaches someone obligated and authorized to act
- How procedures, barriers, training, assurance, and communication work together
- How leaders can turn an existing Safety Management System back toward operational risk
This is not an argument against standards, training, regulation, or Safety Management Systems. It is an argument for making them serve the operation again.
