Although the economy of West Africa (WA) remains heavily dependent on agriculture, it continues to be weakened by limited access to infrastructure, a lack of innovation, land fragmentation, and limited integration into global value chains (GVCs), all of which constrain its competitiveness. This dissertation analyzes the effect of West African countries' participation in GVCs on agricultural productivity and structural transformation. The data used are drawn from World Development Indicators, UNCTAD, and WITS for the period 1990-2018. Panel ARDL and Driscoll-Kraay (1998) methods are employed. The results show that access to electricity, natural resources, and political stability promote participation in GVCs. Such participation improves agricultural productivity but reduces the agricultural sector's share of GDP. However, it hinders the structural transformation of economies. These results underscore the need for countries in the AO to strengthen their infrastructure-particularly energy and industrial infrastructure-in order to better integrate into the high-value-added segments of global value chains and accelerate their economic transformation.
