Global demand for palm oil has continued to increase on daily basis due to increment of world population which gives rise to production, consumption and utilization of food, cosmetic and other hygienic products that contain some sort of material gotten from palm oil. For instance, in the marketing year, 2021/2022, the global production of palm oil was reported to be around 75.5 million metric tons in April 2022, increasing from 73 million metric tons in 2020/2021 marketing year. Also, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) estimates that the world palm oil production 2021/2022 will be 77.05 million metric tons.
Indonesia and Malaysia remain the leading producers and exporters of palm oil globally. Palm oil grows mainly in Africa, Asia, and South America. Global palm oil production is dominated by Indonesia and Malaysia. The two countries produce 85% to 90% of total global oil production. Indonesia is the world's largest producer and exporter of palm oil, followed by Malaysia (2nd), Thailand (3rd), Colombia (4th) and Nigeria (5th). They are the top five countries that produce above 1,000,000 metric tons per annual. Other countries which produce palm oil but below 1,000,000 metric tons include Guatemala (6th), Honduras (7th), Papua New Guinea (8th), Ecuador (9th), Brazil (10th), Cote d'Ivoire (11th), Cameroon (12th), Ghana (13th), DR Congo (14th), India (15th), Costa Rica (16th), Mexico (17th), Peru (18th). Other low producing countries which produce below 100,000 metric tons include Philippines (19th), Sierra Leone (20th), Benin Republic (21st), Angola (22nd), Dominican Republic (23rd), Guinea (24th), Liberia (25th), Senegal (26th), Togo (27th), Venezuela (28th).
