This book is meant to help you become the best version of yourself at work. There is only one of you on this earth, and your thoughts, opinions, and experiences matter. Show up wholly, humbly, and confidently wherever you go. Remember: You have the power to shape your own experiences and the experiences of those around you. And you don't have to do it alone. Mentors, peers, and coaches can help you see what's possible and guide you toward your next step. Consider this book your portable mentor-return to it whenever you need perspective, tools, or encouragement.
With all the twists and turns of my career, here's what I've learned:
- Nobody has it all figured out: We're all doing our best with the information we have. The secret is not to wait until you have it all figured out-keep moving, stay curious, and trust yourself along the way.
- Follow your energy: Even when the path is unclear, your joy, excitement, and interests are powerful clues. Let them guide you. When in doubt, start with what lights you up.
- Start somewhere: Your first (or second or fifth) job doesn't have to be your forever job, but be sure it's a step in the direction of what you want. You'll figure it out one step at a time.
- Speak up: Ask for what you want. Say it out loud, even if it's not being offered. You might be surprised by what happens when you do.
I wrote this book to share with you some of the most meaningful lessons I've learned along my career journey. Whether you're just starting out, considering a new opportunity, or feeling stuck, this book is here to meet you in your now what? moment.
This book is more than a collection of advice, it is a blueprint for action. I encourage you to engage actively with the material as you navigate your career journey. Each chapter is built around three core components to support your growth:
- Real-life stories and scenarios: These stories and scenarios provide context and show how concepts apply in the complex reality of the workplace. Learn from the successes and missteps of others who have stood where you are now. (All names and identifying details in the scenarios have been changed or fictionalized to protect the privacy of the individuals involved.)
- Practical tools and core concepts: The frameworks and strategies you need to handle specific challenges, from navigating difficult conversations to building your personal brand, are included in the tools and concepts.
- Reflection questions: At the end of each chapter, you will find prompts to help you internalize the lessons. I highly recommend answering these in a separate journal to track your progress and insights over time.
While this book follows a logical progression, your career journey may not. Jump between sections and chapters based on your immediate needs.
