The incorporation of silica nanoparticles into adhesives is revolutionising the bonding of materials, particularly those consisting of gels or damp surfaces. These nanoparticles, in aqueous solution, form a fine, porous network that enables strong and rapid adhesion between surfaces. Thanks to their extremely small size (less than 100 nanometres), they interact directly with the molecular structure of the bonded materials, creating multiple bonds without complex chemical reactions. This makes bonding effective even on soft, slippery or dissimilar materials. Among the advantages, this technique provides deformation-resistant adhesion, often stronger than the materials themselves, whilst remaining permeable to necessary exchanges, for example in biological tissues. The resulting adhesive is also self-healing: surfaces that have come unstuck can be re-bonded easily without adding new nanoparticles. Furthermore, this method works without the addition of polymers or heat, making it simple, quick and suitable for a wide range of applications.
