The Maltese Dog - A Complete Anthology of the Dog brings together more than twenty chapters from the rare kennel literature of the period, among them H. W. Huntington's My Dog and I (1897) and The Show Dog (1901), Robert Leighton's The New Book of the Dog (1907), Vero Shaw, Rawdon Lee, Herbert Compton and Walter Hutchinson. Each writes as an authority of his day on a toy breed already ancient when the Romans wrote about it - traced through the Mediterranean trading world, prized as a symbol of loyalty, and recognised by the American Kennel Club in 1888.
The chapters cover the points and the coat, the temperament, the assessment of a dog in the ring, and the celebrated winners and their pedigrees, with the original photographs reproduced throughout.
