Utilities worldwide use chloramines as residual disinfectants for drinking water treatment. The use of chloramines inevitably leads to nitrification. This third edition of M56, Nitrification Prevention and Control in Drinking Water, offers guidance to aid utilities in their nitrification prevention and control efforts.
The first section of the manual discusses the background of occurrence and microbiology of nitrification in various water environments. The second provides the latest approaches to nitrification prevention and response.
This edition of M56 builds upon previous editions with the inclusion of state-of-the-art updates on development of molecular methods for the identification of nitrifying bacteria, improvement of reservoir mixing techniques, better understanding of effects of booster chlorination and chloramination, and investigation of chlorite as a nitrification prevention measure- advances that will have a significant impact on the application of chloramination and nitrification control.
