Hold two mils for a ten-mile-per-hour wind. Add a click for every twenty degrees of temperature. Aim low when shooting downhill. Some of those rules are correct. Some are correct only inside a narrow band of conditions that nobody troubled to state. None of them tells you where it stops working.
That is the real difficulty at distance. A rule of thumb that serves well at 300 yards can fail at 900, not because it was ever wrong, but because the terms it quietly neglected have grown until they matter. And when a shot lands wide, the usual suspects produce the same symptom: an uncertain wind call, a station pressure entered as a sea-level figure, a scope that tracks two percent short, a zero set from a group too small to mean anything. None is diagnosable by trying harder.
