In August of 480 BC, a Persian king watched his army burn Athens to the ground, believing he had finally avenged the humiliation his father suffered a decade earlier at Marathon. Weeks later, in the narrow strait off the island of Salamis, that same king watched his navy collapse in defeat, and the largest invasion force the ancient world had ever assembled began its long retreat home.
King Xerxes I of Persia traces the full arc of one of history's most consequential and misunderstood rulers, from his birth into the young Achaemenid dynasty through his contested rise to the throne, his early battles to suppress rebellion in Egypt and Babylon, and the extraordinary two-year campaign of preparation that culminated in the Second Persian Invasion of Greece. Drawing on the ancient sources that remain our primary window into his life, chiefly the writings of Herodotus, this book follows Xerxes across the Hellespont and into the heart of Greek resistance, through the desperate stand of Leonidas and his three hundred Spartans at Thermopylae, the fall of Athens, and the decisive naval disaster at Salamis that changed the course of the war.
The story does not end with defeat. This book also follows Xerxes through the far less documented final fifteen years of his reign, years largely absent from Greek historical memory but marked by one of the ancient world's most ambitious building programs. It was during this period that Xerxes transformed Persepolis into a monumental testament to Persian imperial power, work that would ultimately stand as his most enduring legacy, long after the smoke had cleared from Athens and the memory of Salamis had hardened into Greek legend.
For more than two thousand years, Xerxes has been remembered largely through the eyes of the people he failed to conquer, cast as the archetype of the oriental despot in accounts shaped as much by Greek storytelling tradition as by historical fact. This book takes that portrait seriously while also looking beyond it, examining the political calculations behind his rise to power, the administrative machinery that allowed him to govern the largest empire the ancient world had yet seen, and the architectural achievements that reveal a far more complex ruler than the caricature that has endured in popular memory.
