The story does not end with the famous battles that most readers already know. It continues through generations of kings whose names rarely make it into popular history, men whose reigns were shaped by court conspiracy, sibling rivalry, and a Persian civil war fought with the help of ten thousand Greek mercenaries. It follows the empire through a brief resurgence under Artaxerxes III and into the chaos that followed his assassination, chaos that left the throne to an unlikely successor just as a young conqueror from Macedonia began his march east.
