It continues through generations of kings whose names rarely make it into popular history, men whose reigns were shaped by court conspiracy, sibling rivalry, and a Persian civil war fought with the help of ten thousand Greek mercenaries. It follows the empire through a brief resurgence under Artaxerxes III and into the chaos that followed his assassination, chaos that left the throne to an unlikely successor just as a young conqueror from Macedonia began his march east.
