It was exactly the kind of defiance the world had come to expect from Sparta, a city whose warriors had once held off the Persian Empire at Thermopylae and gone on to defeat Athens for control of the entire Greek world. This book tells the full story of how that happened.
Beginning with Sparta's uncertain origins among Dorian settlers in the valley of Laconia, this history traces the deliberate construction of one of the most disciplined and feared societies in the ancient world, a city that trained boys as soldiers from the age of seven, built its entire economy on conquered labor, and forbade its own citizens from any pursuit but war. It follows Sparta through its legendary triumphs, the stand at Thermopylae, the long and devastating war with Athens, and the decades of unmatched hegemony that followed. And it follows Sparta through the collapse that came after, when a single afternoon at a village called Leuctra shattered a reputation for invincibility built over more than a century, exposing a citizen population and a social system that had been quietly failing for generations.
The story does not end with defeat. In one of history's more unexpected turns, a Sparta stripped of its army and its independence found new life centuries later as a destination for wealthy Roman travelers, who paid to witness staged rituals and invented festivals performing the memory of a warrior culture that had already disappeared. It is one of the strangest second acts in the ancient world, and it deserves to be as well known as the battle that made Sparta famous in the first place.
