Following the numbers rather than the headlines, Norden uncovers a more complicated and unsettling picture. Behind many supposedly AI-driven job cuts were forces that existed long before ChatGPT: pandemic-era overhiring, rising interest rates, tax changes, cost cutting, restructuring, outsourcing, offshoring, shareholder pressure and the oldest corporate objective of all, doing more with fewer people.
AI offered something different.
A better explanation.
It made ordinary corporate decisions sound technological, inevitable and forward-looking. A redundancy became transformation. A hiring freeze became AI efficiency. Work transferred to lower-cost labour could be described as automation. And decisions made in boardrooms could be presented as consequences of technological progress that nobody could reasonably resist.
Yet this is not an anti-AI book.
Norden also follows the evidence to the places where artificial intelligence really is changing work, from translation and creative industries to software development and entry-level employment. He examines productivity claims, hidden human labour behind supposedly automated systems, the rise of AI-related job announcements, and the uncomfortable possibility that the greatest disruption may still lie ahead.
The result is a provocative investigation into AI, layoffs, corporate power and the stories institutions tell when they want difficult decisions to look inevitable.
Because behind every announcement about the future of work is a question worth asking:
Which system actually replaced the workers?
And if nobody can name it, perhaps we have been asking the wrong question.
The machine didn't make the decision. Someone did.
