Through Arien's eyes, the reader encounters a vivid array of characters: the Beak People, warlords and demagogues who screech proclamations of false unity; Madame Harmony, the profiteer who claims to bottle tranquility for a price; and the Entity of Absence, a mysterious force that promises salvation at the ultimate cost.
