Optoelectronics refers to the study and use of electronic devices and systems for finding, detecting and controlling light. It is commonly regarded as a subfield of photonics. Optoelectronic devices are electrical-to-optical or optical-to-electrical transducers, or instruments that utilize such devices. Optoelectronics is based on the quantum mechanical effects of light on electronic materials, particularly semiconductors in the presence of electric fields.
