The House of Costco is the story of the single promise that explains everything the company does: that the store would always be on the member's side, a duty inherited from its founders and held for four decades against every reason to break it. The whole philosophy fits inside one decision. When an executive carried the founder a clean spreadsheet showing the company lost money on every dollar-fifty hot dog it sold, with a sensible recommendation to raise the price a quarter, the founder did not study the math. He said he would kill him if he touched the hot dog, and told him to figure it out another way. They built their own plants rather than reach into the member's pocket, and the price has not moved since the mid-1980s.
It begins in a borrowed warehouse by the San Diego canneries, with a lawyer named Sol Price who decided a store could owe its customers the same fiduciary duty he had once owed his clients, and the eighteen-year-old who unloaded freight there and absorbed the idea so completely that he spent the next half century refusing every reason to break it. The trail runs north to the first warehouse in 1983, through a capped markup so thin a rival read it as a clerical error, and into the strangest brand in modern retail.
That brand is Kirkland Signature, a plain black-and-white label that grew larger by revenue than Nike, larger than Coca-Cola, built on almost no advertising at all. Here is the worst-kept secret in American retail, the famous names quietly making the cheaper version that undercuts them, and the lawsuits that followed when a warehouse golf ball performed like the one that cost three times as much. Here too is the four-dollar-and-ninety-nine-cent chicken the company defended by building a half-billion-dollar poultry complex in Nebraska, and a renewal rate near ninety percent that holds like a heartbeat every time the membership fee rises.
This is also a clear-eyed reckoning, not a fan's tour. A price held by force is paid by someone, and the book follows the cost to the edges of the empire, to the birds bred too heavy to stand, the first-time farmer carrying the debt, and the sample worker the company arranged not to employ. The loyalty at the center is real. So are the costs at the sides, and a fair verdict holds both in the same hand.
