It turns up on tarot decks and tattoo flash, in song lyrics and the mouths of film villains. Most people who say it could not tell you what it means. Behind it stands a real tradition, several thousand years deep, with a name, a literature, and a history that can be dated: Hermeticism. This is a plain guide to it.
Plainly does not mean dumbed down. It means honest about what we actually know. Hermeticism has spent most of its long life wrapped in fog - some of it genuine mystery, much of it the fog of people who found it useful to keep you confused. This book turns the lights on. It tells you what is known, and how it came to be known, in ordinary language. Where the record is uncertain, it says so. Where a story is too good to be true, it tells you the story and then tells you the truth.

Almost everything written about esoteric tradition quietly mixes three very different things and hopes you will not notice the seams. This book pulls them apart and keeps them apart, on every page:
- Historical fact - what happened, dated and sourced from the public record.
- Traditional teaching - what the tradition itself believes, reported as belief, never smuggled in as proof.
- Symbolic reading - the meaning a phrase or image carries, offered as interpretation, never as a law of the world.
Learn to feel which lane you are standing in, and you can take this tradition seriously without losing your footing - and spot, instantly, when someone selling certainty is hoping you cannot tell the difference.

- The Corpus Hermeticum - the ancient Greek treatises, the vision of Poimandres, and the manuscript that woke a sleeping Florence in 1463.
- The Emerald Tablet - the shortest, most famous Hermetic text, read line by line in plain language.
- As above, so below - the doctrine of correspondence given its proper name and weight.
- The seven Hermetic Principles - Mentalism, Correspondence, Vibration, Polarity, Rhythm, Cause and Effect, and Gender - from the 1908 book called The Kybalion, clarified and set in their true context (it is a New Thought interpretation, not an ancient scripture, and this book says so plainly).
- The long shadow - how Hermeticism shaped alchemy, astrology, and the Renaissance, from Ficino to Bruno.
