Trois mois plus tard, Nasir Khusraw, quarante et un ans, prend la route avec son frère cadet et un jeune serviteur indien.
Pendant sept ans, deux mille deux cent vingt fersengs et près de treize mille kilomètres, il traverse à pied le Proche-Orient musulman à son apogée. Il visite Tabriz meurtrie par les tremblements de terre, longe la côte syrienne avant les Croisades, mesure le Haram al-Sharif de Jérusalem coudée par coudée, vit trois ans au Caire fatimide où il assiste aux processions du calife al-Mostansir, accomplit quatre fois le pèlerinage de La Mecque, découvre l'utopie qarmate de Lahssa, et rentre en haillons par Bassora, sauvé par un marchand persan qui le reconnaît.
Cinquante ans avant la prise de Jérusalem par les Croisés, cent vingt avant la chute du califat fatimide, le carnet de Nasir Khusraw donne la photographie unique d'un monde disparu. Premier grand récit de voyage du monde persan, le Safarnama est aussi le témoignage d'une conversion: l'homme qui rentre n'est plus le même. Il deviendra missionnaire ismaélien, sera persécuté, finira ses jours exilé dans les montagnes du Pamir.
Première réécriture intégrale moderne pour le lecteur d'aujourd'hui, qui rend enfin lisible ce témoignage vieux de mille ans sans rien trahir du voyage. Quinze illustrations originales et cinq cartes du voyage donnent à voir l'itinéraire, tandis qu'un appareil de repères (glossaire, chronologie, deux index et postface) et des morceaux choisis du texte original éclairent la lecture.
