Nel 1409, sotto il regno dell'imperatore Yongle, Fei Xin, nato intorno al 1385 in una famiglia modesta, giovane soldato di fortuna ma già letterato, dallo sguardo vivace e dal gusto per le parole, si imbarca sulle giunche giganti dell'ammiraglio-eunuco Zheng He. Per oltre vent'anni, al ritmo di almeno quattro grandi spedizioni della flotta del Tesoro, sotto i regni di Yongle e poi di Xuande, solca il mar della Cina meridionale, l'oceano Indiano, il golfo Persico e le coste del Corno d'Africa.
Di paese in paese, annota tutto secondo lo stesso schema rigoroso: situazione geografica, rilievo, clima, costumi sorprendenti, economia, prodotti e merci di scambio, talvolta un aneddoto imperiale, poi una poesia che chiude ciascuna delle quarantaquattro notizie. Champa e il suo calendario lunare, Giava la popolosa, con gli episodi retrospettivi dei generali Gao Xing e Shi Bi, Palembang e la cattura del pirata Chen Zuyi nel 1405, lo stretto di Malacca eretto in regno tributario, Sumatra e il suo pepe, il capo di Sulu che nel 1418 offre una perla gigantesca all'imperatore, le isole Nicobare dove una tappa forzata lo trattiene nel 1432, Ceylon e l'impronta del Buddha, dove il re Alagakkonara viene catturato nel 1411, la costa del Malabar con Quilon, Cochin e Calicut, Hormuz e le sue montagne di sale, La Mecca e la sua pietra nera, il Bengala e la sua corte ricoperta d'oro, ricevuta dalle ambascerie dell'eunuco Hou Xian nel 1412 e nel 1415: quarantaquattro contrade sfilano, tra leggende di teste volanti e vedove gettate sul rogo, ambra grigia, incenso di olibano, legno d'aloe e lingotti d'argento.
Ciò che questo testimone dimenticato, semplice imbarcato tra i grandi ammiragli e i letterati di corte, scrisse sei secoli fa, prima che l'Europa aprisse le stesse rotte, disegna una globalizzazione venuta da altrove, che risuona stranamente con la nostra.
