Saint-Malo, 18 mai 1601. Un jeune homme de Laval s'embarque sur le Corbin pour les Indes orientales. Il en reviendra dix ans plus tard, après avoir fait presque le tour du monde et survécu à tout. Le naufrage le jette d'abord sur les récifs des Maldives, où il restera cinq ans captif d'un roi insulaire, apprenant la langue, observant la cour, la justice et les coutumes d'un archipel de douze mille îles.
Puis tout s'enchaîne: l'invasion venue du Bengale qui lui rend la liberté, les rois nayres du Malabar et leurs castes guerrières, l'arrestation à Cochin et la prison, la tour aux fers, Goa la dorée et ses cachots, les îles aux épices des Moluques, enfin le long retour par le cap de Bonne-Espérance, le Brésil et la Galice. De ces dix années d'épreuves, ballotté de geôle en geôle et de naufrage en captivité, François Pyrard rapporte bien plus qu'un récit d'aventures.
C'est la première description française de l'océan Indien vu de l'intérieur, une encyclopédie sensible des hommes, des bêtes et des arbres. Pyrard détaille la religion et la justice des Maldives, le rythme des moussons qui ouvre et ferme les mers, les monnaies de coquillages et les larins d'argent, le cocotier qui nourrit, habille, abrite et désaltère, les navires cousus de fibre sans un seul clou de fer. Il s'attarde sur les épices, les éléphants de guerre et les arbres prodigieux du continent indien. Pyrard n'est ni le conquérant ni le marchand: il est le naufragé, le captif, celui qui regarde ce monde depuis le bas, mêlé aux peuples dont il dépend pour survivre. De là vient la curiosité patiente, presque sans mépris, qui le rend aujourd'hui encore étonnamment proche.
Premier Français à raconter ce monde de l'intérieur, Pyrard signe l'un des plus saisissants témoignages de l'âge des grandes traversées, à mi-chemin du journal de bord, de l'enquête ethnographique et du récit de survie.
Première réécriture intégrale moderne pour le lecteur d'aujourd'hui, qui rend enfin lisible ce récit de naufrage et de captivité sans rien trahir du voyage. Vingt illustrations originales et huit cartes du voyage donnent à voir l'itinéraire, tandis qu'un appareil de repères (glossaire des termes d'époque, chronologie, index des personnages et postface) et des morceaux choisis du texte original éclairent la lecture.
