Le jeune Andrea del Sarto passait tous ses instants de liberté dans la salle du pape à Santa Maria Novella, pour étudier le carton de Michel-Ange pour La Bataille de Cascina et celui de Léonard de Vinci pour La Bataille d'Anghiari, écrit Vasari. Peintre italien de la haute Renaissance, le Florentin Andrea del Sarto fut l'un des plus grands de son époque. Sa maîtrise stylistique le place aux côtés de Michel-Ange ou de Léonard de Vinci. Il peignit pour de nombreux clients, mais surtout pour le cloître du Scalzo, à Florence, où il laisse des fresques monochromes sublimes pour François1er, qu'il rejoint en France mais quitte quand son épouse le rappelle en Italie, pour le réfectoire du couvent San Salvi, près de Florence. Un artiste attachant et sensible.
