Some years ago, I found myself in a desperate situation. I had my wife and our newborn son to provide for, bills piling up, and no steady income in sight. I sent out job applications after job applications, hoping for a break.
Then, finally, it came-a job offer that seemed like a lifeline and the answer to my prayers. It promised stability, a regular paycheck, and an end to my financial worries. I was over the moon. No more scrambling from one temporary job to another.
But as the days passed, my excitement turned sour. The job demanded more than I had imagined. I was scheduled to work from 9 am to 6 pm Monday through Friday for a week, followed by a shift from 6 pm to 9 am the following week, with the cycle repeating itself. And that wasn't all-I also had to endure a 48-hour shift every other weekend, meaning I had to be at work for the entirety of two weekends each month. That means I was working an average of eighty-four hours a week.
Imagine spending nearly half of my life on a job, with barely any time left for anything else. It felt like I was losing myself, suffocating in a job that drained me of happiness and fulfilment. This was a job I was trained for over six years to do. Imagine that.
But did I quit right away? You guess right. No, I did not leave the job. I felt trapped, like there was no way out. I found myself going back to the job day in and day out. Bills don't pay themselves, after all. So I soldiered on, day after day, paycheck after paycheck, feeling more and more like a prisoner of my own life.
I endured this unfulfilling engagement for five months, but it felt like an eternity. Could you imagine what would have happened if I had stayed for years? What would my life look like?
The reality is that I wasn't alone. So many people are stuck with jobs they hate to make ends meet. But the human spirit yearns for something more to bring them joy and fulfilment. That's why I decided to write this book-Find Your Work: Unlocking the Path to Impact, Fulfilment, and Worthy Compensation. It's a guide to discovering the work you're wired to do, the kind that fills your soul with joy and fulfilment and impacts the world around you. It's about finding fulfilment and earning a worthy reward-not just financial rewards but also the intangible rewards money can't buy.
