A Farewell, Of Sorts The final anthology of lyrics from Irish singer/songwriter Paul Murphy, this superb collection contains his last works, a sweeping range of tales in song, ballad, narrative and prose forms. All written in September 2025, the pieces herein reflect the more sombre side of life: broken relationships; social injustice; persecution; emotional upheaval; enforced famines, and, given their author knew he had lost his 10-year battle against a muscle-wasting auto-immune disorder, mortality. The 28 songs herein - written in just 30 days - include material as diverse as 'Bitter Rain From The Sky', an excoriating look at how the world abandoned Gaza, and other likewise afflicted peoples; 'An Eagle Fell To Ground', a take on the Trump regime changes in America; 'It's Always Love (That Pulls You Thru')', a song inspired by the Jimmy Kimmel suspension that was widened out to encompass a positive aftermath view on broken relationships, as well as a final message to his beloved young children; 'What The Dying Wish For' and 'Everybody Wants You', ruminations on life as seen at its end; 'The Return', 'From The 157th Day' and 'The Devil & I', three allegorical folk-ballads; 'As My Heart Breaks' and '(Please) Give Us One Last Chance', two beautiful love songs; and the out-and-out humour of 'Never Mind The Follicles', a tale of time on an old punk-rocker. Also included are an essay, 'Two Arms' [a play on bioth 'To arms' and also the fact that Paul was leg paralysed whilst writing these songs and could only move his arms], detailing the composition circumstances and back-stories to each song; alternate, unused covers; and photographs of the original handwritten manuscripts. Moving, heartwarming, emotive, thought-provoking and, occasionally, disquieting, this anthology collates some of the finest lyrical works of a master songwriter whose narrative talent burned bright until his last line was written. - - - - - - Everybody Wants You [excerpt] Everybody wants you to sing their praises
Everybody wants you to play their games
Everybody wants to know where you keep your key
And how to spell your children's names
When there's a fire that needs some fuel
You're the first one that they call
When they need somebody to take their blame
You're the one they drag down the hall Everybody wants you to be their victim
Everybody wants to sell you out
Everybody claims it was you who tricked them
Into spreading the seeds of doubt
If a heart's in need of stealing
They'll use you as a decoy
When there's rules they need to flout
It's your photograph they deploy Everybody wants you to take the tiller
Then they steer you towards a crash
Everybody wants you to take this briefcase
Then accuses you of laundering cash
They want you to sign this piece of paper
And no, you can't read it first
Everybody hands you a burning bible
And demands you quote it chapter and verse .........
Everybody wants to know where you keep your key
And how to spell your children's names
When there's a fire that needs some fuel
You're the first one that they call
When they need somebody to take their blame
You're the one they drag down the hall Everybody wants you to be their victim
Everybody wants to sell you out
Everybody claims it was you who tricked them
Into spreading the seeds of doubt
If a heart's in need of stealing
They'll use you as a decoy
When there's rules they need to flout
It's your photograph they deploy Everybody wants you to take the tiller
Then they steer you towards a crash
Everybody wants you to take this briefcase
Then accuses you of laundering cash
They want you to sign this piece of paper
And no, you can't read it first
Everybody hands you a burning bible
And demands you quote it chapter and verse .........
