Desert of the Missing is a serious true crime investigation into the Michelle Valdez case and the West Mesa murders, one of Albuquerque's most consequential unresolved homicide clusters. The discovery began in February 2009, when human remains were found on Albuquerque's West Mesa. What emerged from the excavation was not an isolated crime scene, but a burial site containing eleven women and one unborn child. Many of the women had disappeared years earlier. Some had lived in conditions shaped by poverty, drugs, prostitution, unstable housing, and social marginalization. Their disappearances had not all produced the same urgency that followed the discovery of the graves.
This book examines the West Mesa murders without turning uncertainty into accusation. It follows the Michelle Valdez case through the known chronology, victimology, forensic evidence, investigative barriers, suspect-related questions, and the civic consequences of delayed recognition. Who brought these women to the mesa? Was one offender responsible, or does the evidence leave room for a more complicated answer?
