On July 24, 1975, Barbara Colby and James Kiernan were shot after an acting class in Los Angeles. Colby, a working stage and television actor whose career had reached a new point of public visibility, died at the scene. Kiernan, also connected to that acting world, survived long enough to give investigators a partial description: two armed men and a light-colored van. No robbery was publicly established. No motive was publicly proved. No conviction followed.
After Class in Los Angeles examines the unsolved murders of Colby and Kiernan with the caution the case demands. Rather than turning the crime into a Hollywood legend or forcing certainty onto an incomplete record, the book follows the facts that remain: the after-class setting, the brief window of violence, Kiernan's statement, the unresolved vehicle description, the absence of an established robbery, and the theories that have surrounded the case for decades.
The book also restores balance to a story often remembered through the more famous name. Colby's career and public visibility matter, but they do not explain the crime by themselves. Kiernan was not merely a witness or a footnote; he was a co-victim, and his final account became one of the most important surviving fragments in the case. This account keeps both victims at the center while separating confirmed fact, reported statement, inference, and speculation.
Across its chapters, the book considers the major interpretive paths that have shaped public understanding: targeted killing, random or opportunistic violence, interrupted robbery, mistaken identity, and possible comparison to other violence.
