In December 1900, Iowa farmer John Hossack was attacked in his own bed while his family slept nearby. His wife, Margaret Hossack, said an intruder had entered the farmhouse. Prosecutors argued that the violence came from within the marriage. What followed became a deeply contested historical true crime case built on household geography, disputed physical evidence, reported marital conflict, and the difficult logic of circumstantial proof.
The Ax Under the Granary reconstructs the murder, the first trial, the conviction that brought a life sentence, the Iowa Supreme Court reversal, and the second jury's failure to reach a verdict. The reversal did not establish Margaret's innocence, and the hung jury did not establish her guilt. The state did not try her again, no other person was convicted, and John Hossack's murder remained unresolved.
At the center of the book is the farmhouse itself. Doors, light, sleeping arrangements, family movements, and the silence of a dog were all asked to carry evidentiary weight. An ax found beneath the granary became central to the prosecution's theory. Blood and hair were interpreted through the limited forensic methods of the early twentieth century. Each detail created pressure, but none could speak with modern certainty.
The book also examines the marriage history introduced at trial, including testimony and reports of fear, conflict, and alleged domestic violence. These accounts mattered to motive, yet motive could not identify the hand that struck John. Margaret's role as wife, mother, defendant, and witness unfolded before an all-male jury at a time when domestic life and gender expectations shaped how credibility was judged.
Beyond the courtroom, the Hossack case entered American literary history through journalist Susan Glaspell, whose later work transformed elements of the case into an exploration of women's knowledge, domestic silence, and the limits of official perception. This account keeps that cultural afterlife in view without allowing fiction to replace the surviving record.
Written as restrained, evidence-aware true crime, The Ax Under the Granary separates confirmed legal events from allegation, testimony, inference, newspaper framing, and later interpretation. It treats John Hossack first as the victim of a homicide and Margaret Hossack as an accused woman whose conviction was reversed and whose case ended without a final conviction.
