In 1931, roomer Stephen Mak fell from an upper window of Rose Veres's boardinghouse in Delray, Detroit. Was it an accident near a ladder, a deliberate act, or a death made impossible to read clearly after rumor, fear, and public pressure took hold? The Roomer at the Window revisits the historical true crime case that helped create the legend of the Witch of Delray-and asks what remains when the legend is separated from the evidence.
Mak's death quickly became larger than one fatal fall. Investigators and newspapers connected it to life-insurance allegations, earlier deaths associated with the house, reported warnings before the incident, witness accounts from across the street, and an alleged confession whose source and circumstances remained difficult to test. Each detail added force to the prosecution. None could be understood responsibly without examining its limits.
Rose Veres, a Hungarian immigrant landlady, and her son William were convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life imprisonment. Years later, the legal foundation of that judgment failed after a serious procedural defect came to light. Rose received a new trial and was acquitted in 1945. The result did not explain exactly how Stephen Mak died. It left behind a more difficult story: a suspicious death, a prosecution shaped by atmosphere, and a conviction that could no longer carry the certainty once placed upon it.
This evidence-aware true crime investigation follows the window, ladder, insurance papers, witness claims, police pressure, courtroom procedure, newspaper framing, and public mythology that shaped the case. It examines the strongest arguments against Rose and William Veres alongside the defense obscured by sensational reporting. It also considers how Depression-era Detroit, immigrant suspicion, boardinghouse economics, and the language of witchcraft helped turn a disputed criminal case into durable folklore.
At the center is Stephen Mak, the man most often reduced to the event that made another person infamous. The book restores attention to the victim without treating accusation as proof. It asks how a historical murder case should be read when the surviving record is incomplete, the testimony is contested, and later legal correction does not reconstruct the final moments at the window.
