One Damaged Record is an evidence-aware true crime investigation of the Keddie murders, the 1981 Cabin 28 case in Plumas County, California, where Sue Sharp, John Sharp, Dana Wingate, and Tina Sharp became the victims of a crime the legal record never closed.
Rather than treating suspicion as proof, this book follows the case through the surviving record: the morning Cabin 28 was discovered, Tina Sharp's absence, the later recovery of her remains, the evidence involving restraint and weapons, the surviving children, and the difficult questions left by memory, procedure, and time.
The book examines the dominant suspect theory involving Martin Smartt and Severin John Bo Boubede with necessary restraint. Reported statements, possible motive, proximity, later evidence, and investigative attention are taken seriously, but they are not converted into a verdict the court system never reached.
At the center is the fracture between public certainty and legal closure. The Keddie case has endured because it contains physical evidence, a famous location, surviving witnesses, named suspects, criticism of early investigative handling, and decades of true crime retelling. It also contains gaps that responsible language cannot ignore.
One Damaged Record also looks at what happened after the first investigation failed to produce a conviction: cold-case review, evidence questions, public theories, internet certainty, and the way Cabin 28 became a symbol sometimes larger than the people who died there. The book returns the focus to Sue, John, Tina, and Dana, treating the case as more than a haunted location or unsolved mystery.
