The book begins with the engineering problem and the first principles of DDSE. It explains how required Output Data drives the identification of relationships, environmental Input Data, design-selectable Middle Data, and Value and Timing constraints. It then shows how the System Operation Concept becomes the engineering backbone for requirements, Data Contracts, architecture, hardware and software allocation, implementation, assurance mechanisms, verification, operation, lifecycle management, and traceability.
Three continuous examples-door-open warning, cooling-fan control, and object detection-make the method concrete throughout the foundational and methodology chapters. Automotive ECU chapters apply the same logic to sensing, control algorithms, communication, AUTOSAR, ISO 26262, ISO/SAE 21434, and Automotive SPICE. A complete Automatic Emergency Braking example then carries the authoritative signals, relationships, Value limits, Timing limits, interfaces, safety and cybersecurity mechanisms, and verification evidence from operating context to implementation and operation.
The final part explains how established DDSE information can be organized as engineering knowledge and used by repositories, knowledge graphs, governed services, and human-led AI assistance. AI is treated as a consumer and producer of controlled engineering artifacts-not as the source of engineering truth. Seven appendices provide working templates, checklists, standards mappings, and notation references.
