INTRODUCTON TO ACUTE MYELOID LEUKEMIA
Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a cancer of the myeloid cells that make up the blood cells. The most common types of AML are acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), and myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). AML is serious cancer that can lead to death if not treated.

AML is usually caused by a change (mutation) in one of the genes that make up the myeloid cells. The most common gene that is changed in AML is the BCR-ABL1 gene. BCR-ABL1 is a gene that is found on the surface of the myeloid cells. When this gene is changed, it can lead to the spread of cancer cells.
