This study was carried out to determine the contribution of small livestock farming to the livelihoods of households in the town of Kanyabayonga, focusing on rabbit farming. To achieve our objectives, we formulated certain hypotheses which were tested through a survey conducted within our research community. This study found that a lack of mastery of rabbit-rearing techniques was a major factor - cited by 46.9 per cent of our respondents - amongst others Poverty and the unmet needs of rabbit farmers were identified as consequences of this lack of mastery of rearing techniques, at 50 per cent and 47.9 per cent respectively; and the majority (56.3 per cent) identified the adoption of proper rearing techniques as a potential solution. Following a discussion of our survey results, we have developed a project designed to help rabbit farmers improve their knowledge, attitudes and practices regarding rabbit farming.
