Connect With Anyone: Why It Matters, What Gets in the Way, and How to Get It Right, written by international sales executive Shabir Ahmad, takes a hard look at why so many of us struggle to build genuine rapport with people we have only just met. Drawing on two decades of doing business across North America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia, Ahmad makes a compelling case that speaking fluently and connecting deeply are entirely different things.
'I have spent my career walking into rooms where I did not know a single person, ' says Ahmad. 'Cold calls, industry events, first-time meetings with clients who had every reason to say no. What I learned is that the usual advice, smile more, ask questions, be confident, barely scratches the surface. Real connection requires something else entirely.'
That 'something else' is what the book sets out to explore. Ahmad blends his own frontline experiences with research from psychology, neuroscience and communication studies to unpack why we struggle with strangers. He looks at the role of self-assurance, the art of listening without planning your reply, and the subtle signals that body language sends before a single word is spoken. There is also a chapter devoted to cultural nuance, which Ahmad argues is often the missing piece in global business.
One section that has already turned heads is his treatment of cultural communication. Ahmad does not offer a list of dos and don'ts for different countries. Instead, he encourages readers to think about the unspoken rules that shape how trust is built across borders. Kevin Jones, a former Vice President at IBM, described that chapter as 'outstanding, ' while Dan Gallen, Founder and CEO, Dandoire ConTech Consultancy, says that is a 'pure gold for anyone doing business across borders.'
The book is not heavy on theory. It includes exercises that nudge readers to examine their own patterns, what they do well, what they avoid, and what gets in the way when they meet someone new. Ahmad is refreshingly honest about his own missteps, which gives the advice a credibility that many business books lack.
