Between 610 and 632 one man persuaded a society organised around blood-vengeance to give it up, persuaded feuding tribes to accept a written constitution, persuaded a defeated aristocracy to accept its conquerors, and persuaded several thousand people to memorise a text of some seventy-eight thousand words so accurately that it was written down within twenty years of his death.
And the tradition that grew up around him preserved, with unusual care, not only what he said but how he said it - the length of his sentences, the pauses, the repetitions, the questions he asked before he answered, the diagrams he drew in the sand, and the way he turned his whole body toward whoever was speaking to him.
That body of material has never had a book of its own in English. This is an attempt at one.
What it covers
- Speech as a moral category - a scripture that prohibits twelve named ways of speaking, most of them things that are true
- The grain of his speech: slow enough to be memorised, the important thing said three times, general rules compressed into four words
- Teaching - the question before the lesson, the parable drawn from the listener's own work, the line drawn in the dirt, the answer fitted to the questioner
- Registers - how the address changed between a bedouin chief, a Quraysh aristocrat, a Jewish scholar, a Christian bishop, a frightened child, and his own wife
- Listening - his opponents called him an ear as an insult, and his own scripture picked the insult up and kept it
- Correcting people without humiliating them: a technique with identifiable rules, visible because they were sometimes broken
- The sermons, and the documents that created an Arabic administrative prose inside a single decade
- Three occasions when the community was angry with him and refused to obey
And a warning against the obvious mistake
There is a genre of book that presents historical figures as anticipating modern management theory, and it is embarrassing. The final chapter deals with the temptation directly: what a comparison with modern work on rhetoric, pedagogy and negotiation can legitimately show, what it cannot, and where the practice depends on conditions that no longer exist.
