In July 2026, the Department suspended CMMC third-party assessments. A lot of defense contractors read the headline and stopped.
Read your contract instead.
The suspension paused the audit. It did not touch DFARS 252.204-7012, which has required NIST SP 800-171 implementation and 72-hour incident reporting since 2017. It did not remove Level 2 self-assessment from new solicitations. And it did nothing about the annual affirmation a senior person at your company signs with the federal government's name on the other side of it.
The certificate is off the table for now. The obligation is exactly where it was.
This book is how a five-to-fifty-person defense contractor meets it - without a security team, without a six-figure engagement, and without building an enterprise security program scaled down until it breaks.
WHAT MAKES LEVEL 2 DIFFERENT
Level 1 asked a question with a clean answer: can you prove you're doing fifteen basic things? Level 2 asks two harder ones.
Is it actually CUI? Contractors get this wrong in both directions - some run controlled drawings through consumer email, others spend the largest IT budget in company history protecting information the government never controlled. Nobody warns you about the second one, because nobody sells against it.
And if it is CUI, where is it allowed to live? That decision determines whether you apply 110 security requirements to six people and six laptops, or to your entire forty-five-person company. Same standard, seven times the surface. It is worth more than every other decision you'll make, and most contractors make it by accident.
