The Claims of Rome is a comprehensive biblical, theological, historical, and apologetic examination of Roman Catholicism as an integrated religious system. Rather than attacking individual Catholics or relying on inherited Protestant caricatures, the author asks a more fundamental question: Does Roman Catholicism give the sinner Jesus Christ as Scripture gives Him, or does it place Christ within an architecture of mediated religion that binds the conscience to additional authorities, sacraments, mediators, and ecclesiastical claims?
Working from a confessional Sola Scriptura framework, the book treats the canonical Scriptures as the final infallible standard by which every doctrine, tradition, institution, and religious practice must be tested. At the same time, it allows Roman Catholicism to speak through its own authoritative sources, including the Catechism of the Catholic Church, canon law, ecumenical councils, papal documents, liturgical texts, and contemporary doctrinal statements. Major Catholic biblical and theological arguments are presented seriously before being subjected to exegetical and historical analysis.
The study examines Scripture and Tradition, the Magisterium, the biblical canon, Peter and the papacy, apostolic succession, justification, grace, faith, merit, the sacramental economy, priesthood, confession and penance, the Mass and transubstantiation, Eucharistic adoration, purgatory, indulgences, Marian doctrines and devotion, invocation of saints, relics, images, sacramentals, sacred calendars, and related forms of Catholic spirituality. It also traces the historical development of Roman ecclesiastical authority, imperial Christianity, coercion and temporal power, doctrinal development, syncretism, and religious patterns associated with the biblical imagery of Babylon.
Importantly, the book distinguishes documented historical evidence from speculation. It rejects simplistic claims that Constantine suddenly invented Catholicism or that every Catholic practice can be directly traced to pagan religion. Historical parallels, functional analogies, contested claims, and prophetic interpretations are carefully differentiated so that the biblical argument does not depend upon sensational or historically fragile assertions.
The later chapters examine modern ecumenism, interreligious dialogue, global religious convergence, and Revelation's warnings while cautioning against unsupported conspiracy claims and prophetic overconfidence. The central concern remains the authority of Scripture, the sufficiency of Christ's once-for-all sacrifice, justification by grace through faith, Christ's unique mediation, and the freedom of the Christian conscience from doctrines that cannot be established by apostolic revelation.
The book ultimately moves beyond theological controversy to pastoral appeal. It calls Roman Catholics, Protestants, and all professing Christians to place inherited religion beneath the written Word of God, abandon every confidence that competes with Christ, and rest in Jesus Christ as the sufficient Savior, High Priest, Mediator, Advocate, and righteousness of His people.
