Honda put a racing badge on a family hatchback, sold it only in Japan, and left the rest of the world to work out what it had missed.
That was August 1997. The car weighed 1,040 kilograms, made 185 PS from 1.6 litres without a turbocharger, and had its bodyshell seam-welded by hand. Twenty years later the same badge arrived in American showrooms on a car that had just gone round the Nürburgring faster than anything front-wheel drive had managed before.
Ninety multiple-choice questions across ten themed parts cover the whole of it: where the letter R came from and which car wore it first; why the white paint has a name and a date attached; what seam welding actually did; the British factory that built four generations of a Japanese icon and exported them back to Japan; the three-pipe exhaust and the pipe that makes no noise at all; and how a used Honda hatchback came to sell for more than it cost new.

Every load-bearing claim was checked against at least two independent sources, with manufacturer material and contemporaneous road tests preferred over later retellings. Where respectable sources disagree, the answer says so rather than quietly picking the tidier number.
Three things most retellings get wrong: a Japanese PS figure and an American horsepower figure for the same engine are not the same number, and the gap is arithmetic rather than conspiracy. The lap times are not comparable, because the circuit changed what it measures. And two cars sold in the same year under the same name could have different engines, different rear suspension and a hundred kilograms between them, depending on which side of the world they were sold in.
