As the Democratic Republic of the Congo is an economically poor country, it needs strong economic and energy pillars on which to base its development. For this reason, in 2010 the Government signed a Production Sharing Agreement with the company seeking to exploit oil in Block V of the Albertine Rift under Article 5 of Decree No. 049/ CAB/MIN/ECN-T/15/JEB/2011 of September 1, 2011, with a view to ensuring its economic and social development while preserving environmental protection requirements. The prospect of oil exploitation in Lake Edward is currently a hot topic in the DR Congo in general. It is a source of discord in the socio-economic and political circles of the DR Congo. Environmental organizations in North Kivu Province, in particular, are raising major concerns about oil exploitation in Lake Edward at the expense of the North Kivu National Park (PNVi). Several interests are in conflict, and a wise choice must be made for a better future for the DRC. These are the reasons behind this article, which aims to shed light on certain key issues.
