Endometriosis has been widely discussed due to its increasing prevalence. In Brazil alone, the number of cases discovered has increased by 65% in seven years, and to date, the therapies used have proven to be only palliative. It is currently one of the gynaecological conditions that most affects women of reproductive age. In the United States, it is the third leading cause of hospitalisation for gynaecological reasons. It is estimated that there are at least 5.5 million women with this disease in countries such as the United States and Canada. Its incidence in various published studies ranges from 5 to 15% in the female population of reproductive age and from 2 to 5% in post-menopausal women. Current treatments are palliative and often do not produce the desired results. In this sense, acupuncture is a beneficial option with no adverse effects.
