On the evening of February 7, 2008, Charles Lee Cookie Thornton drove his van to a side street beside Kirkwood City Hall in suburban St. Louis, Missouri. He was wearing a sandwich board sign, as he had at dozens of city council meetings before. Hidden underneath it was a .44 Magnum revolver.
In the next three minutes, he killed six people.
What made Cookie Thornton - a college-educated, community-minded, once-beloved figure in the historically Black neighborhood of Meacham Park - walk into a city council meeting with two guns? The answer is not simple, and it is not satisfying. It is the story of a decade of accumulating grievances, failed lawsuits, mounting fines, broken promises, and a man who had tried every legitimate channel available to him and lost at every stop.
72 Seconds in Kirkwood is the first book in the Gateway Crime series, a collection of true crime narratives rooted in St. Louis and its surroundings. It reconstructs the Kirkwood City Hall shooting from the ground up: the history of Meacham Park and its complicated annexation by the prosperous white suburb of Kirkwood, the decade-long dispute over zoning violations and broken development promises, the cascade of losing lawsuits culminating in a federal dismissal just ten days before the shooting, and the seventy-two seconds inside the council chamber that changed the city permanently.
The victims are given their full humanity: Sergeant William Biggs, known throughout Meacham Park as its Mayor, who had spent years coaching youth basketball and bridging the racial divide - and who was the first person shot. Councilwoman Connie Karr, who had worked to improve conditions in Meacham Park and was killed for it. Mayor Mike Swoboda, who survived the shooting only to die seven months later of his injuries.
The book also examines what came after: the racial conversation that Kirkwood could no longer avoid, the DOJ mediation process that ultimately stalled, and the persistent separateness between Meacham Park and the city that had annexed it - a separateness that predated Cookie Thornton and outlasted him.
This is not a story about a crazy man who snapped. It is a story about a system, a city, and a night when years of accumulated choices produced an irreversible catastrophe.
