Young Blood By Milo Cresvik
A retired chemistry teacher hands over six thousand dollars for a treatment that has never been proven to work. She has read the Stanford research. She has printed the papers. She is intelligent, careful, and trusting a system that does not deserve her trust.
Milo Cresvik was the molecular biologist in the building.
For four years he ran the assays, attended the meetings, and read every paper until he understood precisely how wide the gap was between what the science said and what patients were being told. This is his account of how a genuinely fascinating hypothesis, that young blood contains factors which slow aging, became a billion-dollar commercial enterprise before a single controlled human trial had confirmed it worked.
The science is real. Stanford researchers discovered that old mice connected to young ones showed measurable signs of biological rejuvenation. The finding was honest, careful, and opened important questions. None of that stopped a wave of startups from turning a mouse experiment into a medical product, charging thousands per infusion, and building investor decks that cited peer-reviewed papers while omitting the replication failures and internal studies that told a far more complicated story.
Cresvik was in the room for all of it. The presentations where uncertainties were buried under Risk Factors. The meetings where uncontrolled self-report data was called consistent with preclinical findings. The conversation where a founder admitted he knew the science was not where the story was, and had decided to bet it would get there in time.
It did not get there in time.
In February 2019, the FDA issued a public warning. Programs suspended overnight. Patients who had spent tens of thousands across multiple infusions were left with receipts and the memory of being told the research was very promising.
This is not a story about villains. It is more unsettling than that. The people who built these programs were believers who applied Silicon Valley's move fast ideology to a domain where speed has always cost lives. The scientists who stayed, including Cresvik himself, made ordinary compromises until those compromises became something that deserved a harder name.
He includes himself in the accounting. He was there. He knew. This book is what he should have said sooner.
Milo Cresvik holds a doctorate in molecular biology and spent four years as a research scientist inside the plasma transfusion industry.
