For many Viennese during the summer months around 1900, the motto was to avoid the big city as long as possible. Those who could afford it spent their summer stay in remote rural regions such as the Salzkammergut. They were seeking relaxation and a temporary counterbalance to Vienna's increasing industrialization and urbanity. The summer retreat served as an idealized counter-space in which urban constraints seemed to dissolve. In places like Altaussee, such a counter-world was frequently described in literature. At the same time, the guests brought the city to the countryside, so to speak, and adapted what they found to their own needs. This mutual influence left a lasting mark on the social fabric of the region. The perceived social tensions and conflicts were observed by Hugo von Hofmannsthal and Jakob Wassermann, among others, and recorded in their works Das Dorf im Gebirge and Die Romana. These two texts illustrate how the social contrasts between the city dwellers and the locals are literarily staged and made spatially tangible.
