Women of the Ramayana brings together eighteen of these figures - some celebrated, some vilified, many nearly forgotten - and tells their stories on their own terms.
Meet Sita, whose steadfastness became both her strength and her burden. Kaikeyi, remembered as a villain, whose motives were far more complicated than a single boon. Mandodari, the wise queen of Lanka who begged her husband to return what he had taken. Ahalya, turned to stone by a curse and restored by grace. Shurpanakha, whose humiliation lit the spark of war. And Manthara, the maidservant blamed for fourteen years of exile.
Alongside these well-known names are the women history nearly erased: Urmila, who slept for fourteen years so her husband's brother would not stand watch alone; Sunayana, Sita's mother, mentioned in a handful of verses; Trijata, a rakshasi in Ravana's court who showed Sita unexpected kindness; and Sarama, who chose loyalty to truth over loyalty to her adopted homeland.
Organized into four parts - Wives, Mothers, Adversaries, and Ascetics & Devotees - this book draws on Valmiki's original text alongside regional retellings from Tamil, Bengali, and other traditions to show how each woman's story has been told, retold, and reinterpreted across centuries.
Each chapter traces a woman's role in the narrative, the choices attributed to her, the variations across different tellings of the epic, and her lasting symbolic place in Hindu tradition - from temple iconography to modern feminist readings of the epic.
