Few ideas have shaped our self-understanding more profoundly than the belief in free will. Along the way, we meet Schopenhauer, who stripped the will of its illusions; Nietzsche, who challenged the morality built atop them; and psychologists and neuroscientists who today explore how decisions are made, often before we're even aware of them. Rather than offering simple answers, the chapters that follow aim to illuminate the terrain: the metaphysical roots of the free will debate, the structure of the self, the limits of agency, and the possibility of living meaningfully in a world where our freedom is, at best, redefined.
